La Crosse, WI – A winter storm will move across the Upper Midwest this evening, bringing heavy snow and reduced visibility to parts of northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service in La Crosse.
Snow is expected to spread east by 5–8 p.m. Saturday, becoming widespread overnight. The heaviest snowfall rates, up to 1 inch per hour, are forecast between 7 p.m. and midnight, particularly across Mason City, Decorah, Prairie du Chien, and Platteville. Peak impacts are likely between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m., with conditions improving by early Sunday morning.
Forecast totals call for 3–6 inches of snow in northeast Iowa, with 2–4 inches in southwest Wisconsin and 1–3 inches along the I-90 corridor, including La Crosse and Rochester. Areas north of I-90 may see lighter totals due to a southern shift in the storm track, resulting in a sharp cutoff in accumulation.
The NWS warns of hazardous travel conditions, including slick roads and reduced visibility. Motorists are urged to delay or adjust travel plans, especially along Highways 18, 35, and I-90. Snow is expected to taper off between midnight and 4 a.m. Sunday.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as any small shift in the storm track could alter snowfall totals and impact zones.
