La Crosse, WI – Snow showers and strong winds this afternoon are expected to create hazardous travel conditions across the La Crosse area.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a quick-moving band of snow showers will move through the region today, producing around 1 inch of new snow. While accumulations are limited, strong wind gusts up to 45 mph, especially across northeast Iowa and nearby areas, may significantly worsen travel conditions.
Forecasters say blowing and drifting snow could reduce visibility to as low as one-half mile, particularly where fresh snow remains on the ground from earlier in the week. Snow-covered roads are possible, especially on untreated surfaces.
Peak impacts are expected between noon and 7 p.m., coinciding with the afternoon and early evening commute. Drivers traveling on Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 14, and U.S. Highway 53 should be prepared for rapidly changing visibility and slick pavement.
The National Weather Service cautioned that even brief snow showers combined with strong winds can lead to sudden travel slowdowns, especially on open stretches of highway and rural roads. Commuters, delivery drivers, and students are urged to use caution and allow extra travel time.
Motorists are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions may change quickly throughout the afternoon.
