La Crosse, WI – Rain is expected to transition to snow across parts of western and central Wisconsin tonight, creating potentially slippery conditions into early Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) La Crosse. A narrow band of 1 to 4 inches of snow is favored to develop between the I-90 and I-94 corridors, with the highest amounts expected on elevated and grassy surfaces.

According to NWS La Crosse, snowfall will begin overnight as temperatures drop and a storm track shifts across the region. While pavement temperatures may limit widespread road accumulations, areas such as bridges, overpasses, and ridge tops may become slick. Locations including Black River Falls, Wisconsin Rapids, Tomah, Sparta, and Eau Claire fall within the zone of highest accumulation potential, with forecast maps showing localized pockets of 2 to 4 inches.

Forecasters emphasize that even minor accumulations could impact the Tuesday morning commute. Peak impacts are expected between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., when heavier snowfall rates may briefly reduce visibility and create travel delays along major routes such as I-90, I-94, and surrounding highways.

Storm track shifts could alter where the heaviest snow ultimately falls, with NWS noting that slight adjustments in the system’s path may move the accumulation band north or south. Motorists traveling early Tuesday should monitor forecasts closely and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Residents across La Crosse County, Monroe County, Jackson County, and surrounding areas are urged to use caution on untreated surfaces and allow extra time for morning travel. Snow is expected to gradually taper late Tuesday morning as the system exits the area.
