La Crosse, Wisconsin – Roads along and north of I-90 could turn icy overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions just in time for the Thursday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, freezing rain and sleet are expected to develop tonight, especially in areas north of Interstate 90, including La Crosse, Black River Falls, and Sparta. Temperatures hovering near freezing will allow ice to accumulate on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses through early Thursday morning.

Drivers on I-90 and surrounding highways could encounter slick stretches before sunrise, with the highest risk during the early commute window. Even light icing can lead to sudden loss of traction, particularly in elevated areas.

After the initial icing threat, conditions will shift to periods of rain that continue on and off through Saturday. High temperatures will fluctuate from the upper 30s into the 60s at times, supporting a mix of precipitation types early before transitioning mainly to rain.

Residents are urged to limit travel during icy periods, keep emergency supplies in vehicles, and monitor changing conditions. Additional advisories may be issued as the multi-day stretch of precipitation continues.
