La Crosse, WI – The National Weather Service in La Crosse reports snow and strong winds continuing across the region this morning, leading to slick roads, reduced visibility, and difficult travel, particularly along and north of Interstate 90.

Northwesterly winds gusting up to 50 mph are combining with snow to produce blowing and drifting, with 1–3 inches of accumulation expected by this afternoon. Conditions will gradually improve through the evening as snow tapers to flurries and winds slowly decrease.

But forecasters warn this is only the first round of winter weather. A second, more prolonged storm is expected Friday night into Saturday night, potentially bringing 6 inches or more of snow to parts of the region. Confidence is high (>80%) for significant snowfall, with some areas having a 40–60% chance of exceeding 9 inches.

Behind the storms, a surge of Arctic air will bring the coldest air of the season so far. Wind chills will dip into the single digits by Thursday and Friday mornings, with subzero readings possible early next week.

Travelers and residents are urged to:

  • Monitor updated forecasts and local road conditions.
  • Use caution when driving and plan for slippery surfaces.
  • Prepare vehicles and check car batteries ahead of the deep freeze.
  • Bring pets indoors and limit time outside during extreme cold.
