Hazard, Kentucky — Drivers along KY-80 and the Hal Rogers Parkway should prepare for dangerous travel conditions beginning Saturday afternoon or evening, as precipitation changes to a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Forecasters note a noticeable trend toward ice accumulations in southeastern Kentucky, even though not all forecast models agree on exact placement. The greatest likelihood for impactful icing is expected along and south of the KY-80 / Hal Rogers Parkway corridor, which includes the Hazard area.

Any freezing rain would likely accumulate on top of existing snow, significantly increasing the risk of slick roads, loss of vehicle control, and spin-outs, especially on bridges, overpasses, hills, and curves. Conditions could deteriorate quickly after sunset Saturday and remain hazardous into Sunday and early Monday.

Transportation officials urge motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, especially overnight and early morning hours. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance, and carry winter emergency supplies.

Because the ice forecast confidence is medium, small shifts in temperature or storm track could dramatically change where the worst icing occurs. Travelers should monitor updates closely through the weekend.
