ELKHART, Ind. – A fresh wave of lake-effect snow is taking aim at northern Indiana this afternoon, signaling another challenging commute period for drivers as roads turn slick and visibility drops in quick bursts. The snow will build into steady bands later today and persist through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 11 p.m. Monday for Elkhart and Kosciusko Counties. Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of accumulation, most of it falling in localized lake-effect bands that will shift direction with the wind. Conditions could change rapidly within just a few miles.

Drivers along U.S. 30, U.S. 33, and State Road 15 should expect slippery stretches, blowing snow, and reduced visibility, particularly during the Monday morning and evening commutes. The heaviest snow bands may impact areas near Warsaw, Syracuse, and Elkhart, where roads could quickly become snow-covered.

Residents are urged to slow down, use headlights, and give road crews room to work. Even modest snowfall totals can create hazardous travel conditions when lake-effect bands intensify. The system will gradually weaken late Monday night as winds shift north and colder, drier air settles in.

This marks another early test of winter preparedness for the region, with more lake-effect chances expected as temperatures stay below normal into midweek.
