Warsaw, IN – Drivers across Kosciusko County and northern Indiana will see increased police patrols beginning today as local and state agencies launch a major holiday traffic safety campaign running through December 31.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, deputies are partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the annual Safe Family Travel initiative. The effort focuses on reducing impaired driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt violations during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Starting November 26 and continuing through the end of December, officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints, targeted saturation patrols, and enhanced seat belt enforcement across the county. The Sheriff’s Office reports that overtime units will be dedicated specifically to detecting unsafe or impaired drivers.

According to the ICJI, unsafe driving behaviors tend to increase significantly between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. “We see the consequences of unsafe driving every day,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. He urged motorists to slow down, buckle up, and never get behind the wheel impaired during the holiday season.

NHTSA data shows alcohol-impaired driving remains one of the top causes of deadly crashes nationwide, especially during the holidays. Seat belt negligence is also consistently ranked among the most preventable causes of roadway fatalities.

“Driving safely is a shared responsibility,” said Sheriff Jim Smith. “If you plan to drink, plan a safe ride home. Stay sober behind the wheel or arrange a sober ride before the night begins.”

The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to call 911 to report unsafe or suspected impaired drivers. Additional safety guidance is available at www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving.
