Knoxville, Tenn. – Drivers across East Tennessee and parts of southwest Virginia will wake up to dense fog Friday morning, with visibility dropping to near zero in some spots. The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory through 9 a.m., warning of hazardous travel across interstates and secondary roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, the advisory includes Knoxville, Johnson City, Kingsport, Morristown, Oak Ridge, and Bristol, along with counties stretching into southwest Virginia. Motorists traveling on I-40, I-75, and I-81 should use extra caution, as fog is expected to thicken in valleys and low-lying areas through daybreak.

Low visibility is already being reported along the Tennessee River and near Norris Lake, where drivers could experience sudden drops in visibility to a quarter mile or less. Emergency officials urge motorists to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and increase following distance to avoid sudden collisions.

The fog should gradually lift by mid-morning Friday as temperatures rise, though patchy areas may linger longer in shaded valleys.
