Abingdon, IL – More than 50 residents were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a structure fire broke out at Blue Bell Towers in Abingdon, prompting a large multi-agency emergency response and temporary displacement for families and pets.

According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy assigned to the Abingdon area responded to the apartment complex around 12:48 p.m. Thursday after a fire alarm activation. While checking the building, the deputy encountered several tenants on the first floor and soon observed heavy smoke coming from the second floor, extending into hallways throughout the structure.

Residents were immediately advised to evacuate as additional emergency units were requested. The Abingdon Fire Protection District arrived shortly afterward and confirmed an active fire in a second-floor apartment, beginning fire suppression operations.

Authorities said approximately 53 residents, including children and individuals with physical disabilities, were safely evacuated from the building. Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service treated multiple people for smoke inhalation at the scene. One Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputy was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center for smoke exposure and later released.

No life-threatening injuries were reported, and Life Flight was placed on standby but ultimately not needed.

During evacuation efforts, responders rescued multiple animals from the building. One animal required veterinary care, while another was found deceased inside a second-floor unit.

The Knox County Housing Authority assisted with resident accountability and ensured no pets remained inside. Displaced residents and their animals were transported to Hedding Grade School, which served as a temporary shelter. The American Red Cross provided food, blankets, and emergency assistance.

The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
