Yates City, IL – Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying suspects who allegedly broke into the former Yates City High School earlier this week, causing significant damage and vandalism inside the building.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the burglary occurred sometime between Wednesday afternoon, October 15, and Friday morning, October 17, 2025. Investigators say at least two suspects forcibly entered the school, spray-painted walls, and severely damaged multiple classic vehicles stored inside.
The Yates City Police Department reported that graffiti reading “RIP TAMI” and “V + B” surrounded by hearts was found inside. Officials believe the damage may have occurred over multiple days and are asking residents to report any suspicious activity, such as vehicles near the old school, loud noises, or individuals with white, black, or maroon paint on their clothing.
