Skagway, AK – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Municipality of Skagway, including the Klondike Highway and White Pass, from Sunday morning through late Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Juneau.
Forecasters say heavy snow is possible, with total accumulations of 6 to 10 inches along the Klondike Highway. Lower totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected closer to Skagway, where slightly warmer air may limit accumulation near sea level.
The heaviest snow is expected Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening, with difficult travel conditions likely on the mountain passes and high terrain routes. Motorists are urged to prepare for reduced visibility and slick roads.
A transition to rain is forecast late Sunday night into Monday morning, as temperatures rise with a push of warmer air from the south. Still, forecasters caution that snow totals may vary, depending on how quickly the warm air moves up Lynn Canal.
Residents and travelers are advised to monitor updated forecasts throughout the weekend as this system develops. For real-time travel conditions, visit 511.alaska.gov.
This storm marks one of the first significant snowfall events of the early winter season for Alaska’s northern panhandle and could impact both local travel and tourism routes along the Klondike corridor.
