Kirksville, Missouri – Drivers across north central and northeast Missouri have hours before snow and light ice begin falling at 6 p.m. Sunday, setting up slick travel through the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday for Mercer, Putnam, Schuyler, Adair, Sullivan, Grundy, Livingston, Linn and Macon counties. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow along with a light glaze of ice, enough to coat untreated roads and bridges overnight.
In Kirksville, Chillicothe, Trenton and Macon, rain may briefly mix with snow early in the evening before colder air locks in. Elevated roadways along U.S. 63, U.S. 36 and Route 5 could become slick first, especially after 9 p.m. Rural highways and shaded areas may remain icy into early Monday.
MoDOT urges drivers to reduce speeds, increase following distance and check live road conditions at traveler.modot.org before leaving home. Even a thin ice glaze can sharply reduce traction during peak travel hours.
Precipitation should taper after sunrise Monday, but slick patches may linger past 9 a.m. if temperatures hover near freezing. Additional advisories could follow if ice accumulation trends higher overnight.
