Hanford, CA – A prolonged stretch of intense heat will grip the San Joaquin Valley this week. The sweltering conditions will send temperatures soaring into the upper 90s, creating dangerous situations for residents across Kings County. The persistent heatwave begins Sunday and is expected to peak midweek, offering little relief for several days.

According to the National Weather Service, the hot and dry pattern begins Sunday with a high near 96°F. The heat continues into the workweek, with Monday and Tuesday both expected to reach a high of 94°F under relentlessly sunny skies. Winds will remain light, providing minimal cooling effects during the peak afternoon hours.

Travel along major roadways like State Route 198 and State Route 43 could become hazardous due to the risk of vehicle breakdowns and shimmering asphalt. Officials urge motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good working order before heading out. The primary concern is for public health, especially for children, the elderly, and those who work outdoors.

Residents should take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. It is critical to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even before feeling thirsty. Seeking out air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day is strongly advised. Community members are encouraged to check on elderly family and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the extreme temperatures. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can become lethal in minutes.

The heat is set to intensify as the week progresses. Wednesday will likely be the hottest day, with the mercury climbing to a blistering 99°F. Conditions for the Juneteenth holiday on Thursday will also be exceptionally hot, with a high near 98°F.

This extended period of heat will remain in place through next week.
