Kimball, Nebraska – Critical fire weather conditions are expected Saturday across portions of the western Nebraska Panhandle, prompting a Red Flag Warning due to strong winds and very dry air.

According to the National Weather Service Cheyenne, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for Kimball and Cheyenne counties, as well as the southwest corner of Banner County. During this time, wind gusts up to 45 mph combined with relative humidity as low as 15 to 20 percent will create conditions favorable for rapid fire ignition and spread.

The greatest impacts are expected near major transportation corridors including Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 385, U.S. Highway 30, and Highway 26, where open terrain and dry fuels can allow fires to grow quickly. Any fire that starts may spread rapidly and become difficult to control, especially during peak wind periods in the afternoon.

Forecasters emphasize that highlighting these conditions is especially important because fires can start from common activities, including vehicle exhaust over dry grass, dragging chains, welding, or improper disposal of cigarettes. As a result, outdoor burning is not recommended, and residents are urged to strictly follow all local burn restrictions.

Travelers along I-80 near Kimball and Sidney should also be aware that strong crosswinds may impact high-profile vehicles, while any roadside fire could quickly threaten travel corridors.

The Red Flag Warning highlights an elevated risk for grassland and rangeland fires, which can move quickly under strong winds. Local fire agencies may see increased activity if ignitions occur.

Conditions are expected to improve Saturday evening as winds weaken and humidity levels begin to recover. Until then, residents, ranchers, farmers, and outdoor workers are urged to remain fire-aware and take preventive actions.

The National Weather Service recommends monitoring updated fire weather statements at weather.gov/cys throughout Saturday.
