Key West, FL – Drivers across the Lower Florida Keys may encounter water-covered roads this afternoon after torrential thunderstorms dumped up to 3 inches of rain, prompting a Flood Advisory through 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Key West, the heaviest rainfall hit the area just before 12:45 p.m., overwhelming poor drainage systems from Big Coppitt Key to Upper Sugarloaf Key. While the worst of the storm has passed, standing water continues to impact low-lying roads and intersections, particularly along U.S. 1 between mile markers 15 and 8.

Roads in Boca Chica, Shark Key, Geiger Key, and Saddlebunch Keys are among the most affected, with drivers advised to avoid travel if possible. Monroe County officials urge residents to turn around if they encounter water over the roadway—depth can be deceptive and dangerous.

The National Weather Service warns that floodwaters may take several hours to recede. Motorists are advised to monitor updates and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

Flooding concerns remain in effect until 1:30 p.m., with further advisories possible if rainfall resumes.
