Elgin, S.C. – Drivers across Kershaw County are facing an unusual and dangerous problem: roads littered with nails and screws that have punctured tires and caused widespread frustration among residents.

According to WIS-TV, the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what they believe may be intentional acts of road sabotage. The debris has been discovered in multiple areas, including the intersection of Highway One and Watts Hill Road, where residents say they’ve started avoiding travel altogether.

Resident Wesley Cook has taken matters into his own hands, using a homemade magnetic roller to collect the metal debris after his vehicle and several neighbors’ cars suffered tire damage. “It feels like a job, and it’s tiring,” Cook said. “Someone is clearly doing this on purpose—it’s everywhere.”

Sheriff Lee Boan confirmed that investigators, along with SLED and county code enforcement, have placed surveillance cameras and increased patrols in problem areas. A person of interest has been captured on video but has not yet been publicly identified.

“If caught, the individual could face serious charges,” Boan said, noting that penalties could escalate if intent or injury is proven.

A community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Potter Community Center to update residents on the investigation.
