Kern County, CA – Drivers across Central California could face hazardous travel conditions starting Wednesday night as powerful winds sweep into Kern County, especially in mountain passes and desert corridors where gusts may reach damaging levels.

According to the National Weather Service office in Hanford, a High Wind Watch and Wind Advisory are in effect for the Kern County Mountains and Desert from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Thursday. Wind gusts could peak near 60 mph along the Tehachapi Range, with desert areas seeing gusts up to 50 mph as a disturbance moves through the region.

The strongest winds are expected along Highway 58 through Tehachapi, Highway 14 near Mojave, and open desert stretches near California City and Ridgecrest. High-profile vehicles, including trucks, RVs, and trailers, may struggle to maintain control, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Blowing dust could also reduce visibility in exposed areas.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel through mountain passes, and use extra caution if driving crosswinds. Power disruptions are possible if winds impact trees or utility lines in vulnerable locations.

Wind alerts remain in effect through Thursday evening, and additional advisories could be issued if conditions intensify or linger longer than expected.
