Bakersfield, CA – Fire conditions are lining up fast across Eastern Kern County, where dry air and gusty winds could allow flames to spread rapidly by Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a passing low pressure system will drive northwest winds across Central California, dropping minimum relative humidity below 10 percent while pushing gusts between 30 and 40 mph by Friday. These conditions significantly increase the chance that any spark could ignite and spread.

Communities east of Bakersfield, including Ridgecrest, California City, and areas along Highway 58, face the highest risk. Open desert terrain and dry vegetation create a setup where fires can move quickly, especially during peak wind periods late in the day. Blowing dust may also reduce visibility for drivers on exposed roadways.

Residents are urged to avoid activities that could produce sparks. That includes skipping yard work with power tools, securing trailer chains, and following all local burn restrictions. Emergency officials also recommend reviewing evacuation routes and preparing a go-bag in case conditions change quickly.

The elevated fire risk is expected to persist through Friday night, and additional advisories could be issued if winds strengthen further.
