Eastern Kentucky – Light snow is expected to create slippery road conditions overnight into early Saturday, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across portions of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the advisory continues until 7 a.m. Saturday for Harlan, Letcher, and Pike counties, including the communities of Harlan, Whitesburg, Jenkins, Cumberland, Pikeville, Elkhorn City, Coal Run, and South Williamson.

Forecasters expect snow accumulations of up to 1 inch in valley locations, with up to 2 inches possible at elevations above 2,000 feet. While snowfall totals are relatively modest, cold temperatures will allow snow to accumulate on untreated roads, particularly overnight.

Road conditions may become slick and hazardous, especially on secondary roads, bridges, and higher-elevation routes. Even light snowfall can create dangerous driving conditions, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.

No significant wind impacts are expected, but lingering snow and cold pavement temperatures may allow icy patches to develop by early Saturday morning. Drivers in mountainous areas should be prepared for locally higher accumulations and changing conditions over short distances.

Emergency officials urge motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling, allowing extra stopping distance and remaining alert for slick spots. Those traveling overnight or early Saturday are encouraged to check road conditions before departing.

Snow is expected to taper off by Saturday morning as the advisory expires, with road conditions gradually improving later in the day.
