Jackson, Kentucky – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of east central Kentucky as a wintry mix creates the risk of icy road conditions early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the advisory is valid until noon EST Wednesday, affecting Fleming, Montgomery, Bath, Rowan, Estill, Powell, and Menifee counties, including Mount Sterling, Morehead, Flemingsburg, Owingsville, Irvine, Stanton, and Frenchburg.
Forecasters say a mix of freezing rain, snow, and plain rain is moving into northwestern portions of the advisory area this morning. Some locations are expected to remain below freezing for several hours, allowing icy patches to develop on roadways.
The greatest concern is for bridges and overpasses, which may become slick before surface temperatures rise above freezing. As temperatures gradually warm later this morning, the threat for icing is expected to diminish, with conditions improving by around noon.
The National Weather Service warns that hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute, especially for drivers traveling early or on untreated roads. Reduced traction may lead to longer travel times and an increased risk of accidents.
Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution while driving this morning. Officials recommend allowing extra time to reach destinations and being alert for sudden icy spots, particularly in shaded or elevated areas.
Up-to-date road conditions across the state are available through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at goky.ky.gov.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring weather updates as conditions evolve through the morning.
