Eastern Kentucky – A long-duration Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across much of eastern Kentucky as a powerful winter system is expected to deliver heavy snow, significant ice accumulation, and dangerous travel conditions through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Monday for portions of east central, northeast, south central, and southeast Kentucky, including communities such as London, Hazard, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Somerset, Corbin, Morehead, Mount Sterling, and Harlan.
Along and northwest of a line from Pulaski County to Pike County, snowfall totals are expected to range from 6 to 12 inches, with the highest amounts near and north of the Interstate 64 corridor. In these areas, ice accumulations of 0.1 to 0.4 inches are also possible. Farther southeast of the Pulaski–Pike line, snow totals of 3 to 7 inches are forecast, along with 0.1 to 0.5 inches of ice from freezing rain and sleet.
Forecasters warn that power outages and tree damage are likely, particularly where ice accumulates on top of snow. Travel could become nearly impossible, and hazardous conditions may significantly impact the Monday morning commute.
Residents are urged to avoid travel, prepare for extended outages, and monitor road conditions at goky.ky.gov.
