Lexington, Ky. – A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for much of Kentucky until 1 a.m. Thursday, with damaging winds, large hail, and intense lightning threatening nearly 60 counties across the state.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Watch 439 was issued at 7:45 p.m. EDT Wednesday. It covers central, eastern, and southern Kentucky—including Lexington, Bowling Green, and Ashland—until 1 a.m. EDT Thursday. Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph, with isolated hail up to one inch in diameter.
Cities like Lexington, Richmond, and Somerset are at elevated risk as lines of fast-moving storms approach from the west. KY-80, I-64, and I-75 corridors may see rapid weather changes overnight. Power outages and downed trees are possible, particularly in counties like Fayette, Warren, and Pulaski.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, secure outdoor items, and keep phones charged in case of outages. Avoid travel where possible, especially in rural areas where downed limbs could block roads.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by early Thursday, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if cells redevelop or intensify overnight.
