Louisville, KY – Rain showers and embedded thunderstorms are moving across Kentucky today as a cold front approaches from the west, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville. The heaviest rainfall is expected tonight through Tuesday evening, with totals ranging between 1 to 2 inches for most areas.

According to the NWS, a few locations could see localized rainfall amounts exceeding 2.5 inches, which may lead to minor flooding in low-lying or poor drainage areas. The system is expected to help ease ongoing drought conditions across parts of the state, though forecasters are urging caution for drivers and residents near streams or flood-prone zones.

Rain chances will increase and become more widespread Tuesday before tapering off by Tuesday night. A few strong storms are possible, though severe weather is not anticipated, forecasters said.

Cities including Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Elizabethtown, and Bowling Green are forecast to receive between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain, while southern counties such as Central City and Leitchfield may approach the higher end of the range.

Confidence in rain totals is rated medium, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This round of rain is expected to bring beneficial moisture to drought-stricken areas, marking one of the more widespread rainfall events in recent weeks.
