Louisville, Kentucky – Conditions are primed for tornado-producing storms across central and western Kentucky this afternoon, with a Tornado Watch in effect until 9 p.m. EST.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, Tornado Watch 10 includes more than 35 Kentucky counties, stretching from Jefferson and Oldham counties in the Louisville metro south and west through Hardin, Nelson and Bullitt counties, and across western Kentucky including Daviess, Henderson, Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties.
Cities under the watch include Louisville, Owensboro, Bowling Green, Elizabethtown and Frankfort. Storms that develop through late afternoon and evening may produce isolated tornadoes, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and large hail. The greatest risk will likely peak between the late afternoon commute and mid-evening hours.
Low-lying counties along the Ohio River such as Hancock, Union and Webster could see strong rotating cells, while inland areas including Marion, Taylor and Mercer counties should also remain alert for rapidly strengthening storms.
Residents should review shelter plans immediately and be prepared to move to an interior room on the lowest floor if warnings are issued. Keep phones charged and weather alerts enabled. The Tornado Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. EST, with additional warnings possible as storms intensify.
