Louisville, Kentucky – Residents across much of central Kentucky and south central Indiana face a heightened tornado threat through 9 p.m. Thursday, with storms capable of producing damaging winds and isolated tornadoes moving through the region this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, Tornado Watch 10 remains valid until 9 p.m. EST (8 p.m. CST) for 36 counties, including Jefferson, Bullitt, Hardin and Franklin counties in Kentucky and Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties in Indiana. The watch signals favorable conditions for tornado development, along with wind gusts that could exceed 60 mph and large hail.
The Louisville metro area, including downtown Louisville, Jeffersonville and New Albany, sits squarely within the watch zone. Communities such as Elizabethtown, Shelbyville, Bardstown and Frankfort could also see strong to severe thunderstorms through the evening commute. Interstate corridors including I-64, I-65 and I-71 may experience sudden visibility drops and debris on roadways if warnings are issued.
Emergency managers urge residents to identify a safe shelter location now, preferably a basement or interior room on the lowest floor. Charge mobile devices and monitor weather alerts closely.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 9 p.m., and additional warnings could be issued with little lead time as storms intensify.
