Pikeville, KY – Light snow continues to cause slick travel across eastern Kentucky this afternoon as winter weather gradually tapers off but remains impactful for drivers heading into the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Jackson, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. Monday, depending on the county. Communities under the 7 p.m. advisory include Floyd, Pike, Martin, and Letcher Counties, where snowfall totals of up to 2 inches are expected, with isolated pockets near 3 inches. These totals are enough to create slippery roads on highways, rural routes, and hilly terrain.
Farther north and west—including Elliott, Johnson, Knott, Magoffin, and Morgan Counties—the advisory continues until 5 p.m., with 1 to 3 inches expected before snowfall diminishes.
Forecasters warn that even as snow slows down, cold surfaces will keep roads slick through the late afternoon. Temperatures and light winds will prevent quick melting, particularly on bridges, shaded areas, and untreated pavement. The NWS notes that the Monday evening commute may be affected across the region, especially for drivers navigating mountain passes and narrow hollows.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and remain alert for changing conditions along major corridors, including U.S. 23, U.S. 119, and the Mountain Parkway. State officials encourage residents to check updated travel conditions using Kentucky’s GoKY road information service.
Snow is expected to taper off by early evening, with gradual improvement expected overnight.
