Paducah, KY – Residents across western Kentucky and southern Illinois should brace for multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms today and again tonight, with unsettled weather extending into early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, some of these storms could become strong to severe, producing hail and gusty winds. Locally heavy rainfall is also expected, raising the potential for flash flooding in isolated areas. A frontal system is forecast to move through by Wednesday afternoon, helping to clear conditions.
Rainfall totals are projected to range between a half inch and 2 inches across much of the region, including Paducah, Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Marion, and Evansville. While the precipitation will provide some relief for ongoing drought conditions, forecasters caution it will not be enough to eliminate them entirely.
Motorists should be alert for water ponding on roads during heavier downpours, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas. The weather service also warns that strong winds and hail could make for hazardous travel and outdoor conditions during storm periods.
Conditions are expected to improve later Wednesday as drier air moves into the region.
