Jackson, Kentucky – Strong thunderstorms could rapidly develop across eastern Kentucky this afternoon, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes through the early evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms remains in place across eastern Kentucky on Wednesday. Multiple rounds of storms could develop from midday through the evening frontal passage, with the strongest cells capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail, along with the potential for isolated tornadoes.

Cities including Jackson, Hazard, Pikeville, London, and Somerset are within the risk zone. Storms could impact travel along Hal Rogers Parkway, U.S. Highway 23, and Interstate 75, where sudden heavy rain and strong wind gusts may create hazardous driving conditions.

Emergency managers urge residents to keep weather alerts enabled on mobile devices and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during the afternoon when storms may intensify quickly. Outdoor activities may need to move indoors if warnings are issued.

Storm chances should decrease later Wednesday evening as the cold front moves east, though additional weather updates or advisories may be issued if storms strengthen across eastern Kentucky.
