Paducah, KY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Paducah is reminding residents that fall can bring some of the most dangerous tornado outbreaks in the region. A new bulletin highlights past deadly storms as communities enter another season of heightened risk.
According to the NWS, several notable outbreaks have struck Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana during the fall months. On November 6, 2005, two F3 tornadoes killed 25 people in southwest Indiana. Just days later, on November 15, 2005, 13 tornadoes—including an F4 and F3—tore through western Kentucky.
Other destructive outbreaks included a deadly EF3 tornado in Brookport, Illinois, on November 17, 2013, and a record-setting Halloween outbreak the same year, when 19 tornadoes and two microbursts were reported across the region. Owensboro, Kentucky, also experienced an EF3 tornado during a 16-tornado outbreak on October 18, 2007.
The NWS stresses that strong to violent tornadoes are not limited to spring. “Some of the most impactful tornado events have occurred in the fall,” the agency warned. Officials urge residents to review severe weather safety plans, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and remain prepared during volatile weather patterns this season.
