Kentucky – Gray skies lower over the Ohio Valley this morning as cold air settles in and pavement stays quiet for now. That calm won’t last. A developing winter system is lining up to disrupt travel later today and into the night across Louisville and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from early afternoon through early Wednesday morning. Snow spreads in after early afternoon, with a mix of rain and snow possible at times. Most locations can expect a coating up to 1 inch of slushy snow, with brief freezing rain creating a glaze of ice in spots.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly during the late afternoon and evening commute. Interstates I-64, I-65, and I-71 could become slick as temperatures hover near freezing. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated side streets will be most vulnerable as snow compacts and ice forms.
Snow tapers later tonight, but colder air follows behind the system. By Wednesday morning, lingering slick spots are likely, especially in shaded areas and on elevated roadways. Drivers should slow down and plan extra time through the early commute.
Wednesday stays cold and mostly cloudy, with highs near the upper 20s. Any melting will be limited. Another refreeze is expected Wednesday night as temperatures drop into the lower teens, prolonging icy conditions into Thursday morning.
Thursday brings sunshine but little warmth, with highs near 29. Conditions finally improve heading into Friday as temperatures climb into the 40s under partly sunny skies. That warming trend continues into the weekend, easing winter’s grip for now.
Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook suggests above-normal temperatures building late next week across parts of the Ohio Valley, hinting at a quieter pattern after this midweek winter hit.
Avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall, watch your footing outdoors, and check road conditions before heading out. Are roads already slick where you are?
