Louisville, KY – An Arctic cold front is forecast to sweep through Kentucky late next week, bringing subzero wind chills, single-digit lows, and the coldest air of the season between Thursday, December 11, and Monday, December 15. Cities including Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, and Owensboro are expected to feel the full impact by next weekend.
According to the National Weather Service Louisville, a surge of Arctic air will settle across the Ohio Valley by Friday night, producing morning lows in the single digits to low teens and wind chills as low as –5°F to –15°F, especially in northern and central Kentucky.
The pattern looks mostly dry, though brief flurries or isolated light snow showers could develop as the cold front pushes through on Thursday. Most areas will remain snow-free but icy spots may develop on bridges and untreated roads.
Forecasters advise residents to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and check heating systems ahead of the cold outbreak. Pet owners are urged to bring animals indoors as subzero wind chills can be life-threatening.
The frigid conditions will likely persist into Monday, December 16, before slowly easing early the following week. Officials are also monitoring a possible secondary cold surge around mid-December.
