Louisville, Kentucky – Kentucky residents could see renewed winter travel disruptions as a late-January weather pattern increases the likelihood of accumulating snow across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, Kentucky is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling a higher chance for one or more organized winter systems affecting the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. The risk spans northern, central, and eastern Kentucky.

In north-central Kentucky, including Louisville and surrounding Jefferson County, below-normal temperatures increase confidence that precipitation falls mainly as snow. That could create slick conditions along Interstates 64, 65, and 71, particularly during overnight and early morning travel windows.

Central Kentucky communities such as Lexington may see snow arrive in multiple rounds, raising the potential for cumulative impacts on U.S. Route 60, Interstate 75, and local roadways. Farther south and west, including Bowling Green, colder air pressing into the region could allow snow to accumulate even outside the higher terrain.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet urges residents to monitor road conditions closely, limit non-essential travel during snow, and keep vehicles stocked with winter safety supplies. With colder air expected to persist, any snow that falls may linger between systems.

More detailed timing and potential winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with clearer impacts becoming available by early next week.
