LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – A silver glaze of frost sparkles across rooftops and fields this early Thursday as autumn air tightens its hold. By early Friday morning, the chill will turn biting across the region as a Freeze Warning takes effect for Louisville, southern Indiana, and much of central Kentucky. Temperatures are expected to plunge into the upper 20s and low 30s — cold enough to end the growing season for many.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the Freeze Warning will be in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday. Sub-freezing conditions will grip areas along and north of the Ohio River, including New Albany, Corydon, and Jeffersonville in Indiana, and stretch south through Bardstown, Shelbyville, and Elizabethtown. Frost-sensitive vegetation and unprotected plumbing are at risk. Residents should cover plants, bring in hanging baskets, and ensure outdoor pets have shelter from the early-morning cold.

Friday will bring sunshine but remain brisk, with highs near 61°F and a calm breeze from the west. Saturday warms slightly into the low 60s before clouds thicken again ahead of a weak front, which may spark a few light showers by late Saturday night and Sunday. The first part of next week trends mild, with highs in the upper 70s under partly cloudy skies — a welcome rebound after this sharp cold snap.

This freeze event aligns with a broader fall pattern across the Midwest, where states from Iowa to Virginia will mark the end of their growing season. While Kentucky stays frost-bound rather than snowy for now, the message is clear: the winter transition is underway, and late October is delivering its first true taste of the cold season.
