PADUCAH, Ky. – Fall’s quiet calm has settled over the Ohio River Valley this week, but a colder turn is just days away. Clear skies and light winds through midweek are setting the stage for patchy frost by early Friday, the first sign of deeper autumn settling into western Kentucky.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, highs near 70°F Wednesday and Thursday will give way to colder mornings as a weak front slides through the region. Lows will fall into the upper 30s by Thursday night, and some rural areas from Mayfield to Princeton could briefly touch freezing. Gardeners and growers should take precautions to protect tender plants, especially in low-lying valleys prone to frost.

Forecasters also expect winds to pick up Wednesday afternoon, gusting up to 25 mph at times along the I-24 corridor. The combination of dry air and breezy conditions could briefly raise fire danger, particularly across southern Illinois and western Kentucky farmland.

By Friday, clouds will thicken ahead of the next system, bringing a slight chance of showers late in the day. The weekend looks mild but unsettled — mostly cloudy with scattered rain chances both Saturday and Sunday. To be fair, no severe weather is expected, but outdoor plans may need quick adjustments.

For now, residents can enjoy one more stretch of golden fall sunshine before coats, car defrosters, and early-morning frost returns to the picture. After all, Halloween week is coming — and so is the heart of fall in Kentucky.
