Jackson, KY – A Flood Warning is in effect for Jackson and surrounding areas as heavy rain continues to create hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service issued the warning, expecting flooding of local rivers, creeks, and other low-lying areas through Saturday morning. The warning covers portions of eastern and southeastern Kentucky, including areas such as Breathitt, Johnson, and Knott counties.
According to the NWS, significant rainfall has already begun affecting the region, and roadways remain at risk due to rising water levels. Those living near creeks and streams should be on alert for potential flooding, and travelers should avoid affected roads. Some of the hardest-hit areas include Jackson, Prestonsburg, and Hazard, where water levels have reached near flood stage. A flood watch will remain in effect through Sunday morning, heightening the need for residents to stay informed on rapidly changing conditions.
The weekend forecast shows rain and thunderstorms continuing into Saturday, with the possibility of up to 2 inches of rain in some areas. The chance of severe weather increases overnight with the potential for damaging winds and large hail. The stormy conditions are expected to subside by Sunday, with more manageable weather ahead.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast includes cooler temperatures with highs in the low 50s Sunday and Monday. A frost advisory is also in effect Monday night, and travelers should expect clear, sunny weather by Tuesday.
