London, Kentucky – A developing winter storm system could bring periods of snow and hazardous travel to eastern Kentucky and eastern Tennessee from Wednesday, Jan. 14, through Friday, Jan. 17, with the greatest concern focused along the Appalachian spine.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, eastern portions of Kentucky and Tennessee currently fall within a 20 to 30 percent probability range for disruptive winter weather. While confidence in a high-impact event remains lower than farther north, forecasters caution that the region’s terrain and proximity to colder air could allow snow to develop if conditions align.

The areas most likely to see winter impacts include eastern Kentucky along Interstate 75, U.S. Route 23, and Interstate 64, as well as eastern Tennessee along Interstate 81, U.S. Route 11W, and mountain routes near the Cumberland Plateau. Snowfall, if it occurs, would most likely develop during overnight or early morning hours, increasing the risk for slick roads and reduced visibility.

Higher elevations across the Cumberland Plateau and Appalachian foothills may see enhanced snowfall compared to surrounding lowlands. Even light to moderate accumulations could cause travel difficulties on winding mountain roads and untreated secondary routes. Gusty winds in exposed areas may also contribute to localized blowing snow.

Farther west across central Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, precipitation is more likely to fall as rain, limiting winter impacts. However, forecasters warn that small shifts in storm track or colder air timing could expand snow chances farther west than currently projected.

Residents in eastern Kentucky and eastern Tennessee are encouraged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for possible travel delays. KYTC and TDOT advise checking road conditions before traveling later this week.

Forecast confidence is expected to increase as the system approaches, and localized winter weather advisories may be issued if snow potential becomes more certain.
