Jackson, Ky. – Drivers across eastern Kentucky are waking up to thick valley fog Friday, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less in several communities before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, dense fog has settled in overnight across Fleming, Laurel, Pike, and surrounding counties, creating dangerous travel conditions along highways such as I-75, US-23, and KY-15. Visibility is expected to remain low until fog begins to lift around 9 a.m.
Morning commuters in Flemingsburg, Somerset, Hazard, and Pikeville are urged to allow extra time, use low beam headlights, and maintain greater distance between vehicles. Emergency management officials remind drivers to avoid sudden stops and use caution on rural routes where fog tends to pool in low-lying areas.
Dense fog like this is common in Kentucky’s valleys during humid summer nights, especially after recent rain. Residents are encouraged to delay non-essential travel until late morning if possible.
The fog threat will diminish by 9 a.m., but drivers should watch for isolated patches in shaded areas through mid-morning. More weather advisories could be issued if visibility remains low later today.
