Louisville, Kentucky – Drivers and evening commuters across central Kentucky could encounter strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and isolated tornadoes as a cold front moves through the region late Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, strong to severe storms are expected to develop during the late afternoon and evening as the front pushes south across the state. Forecasters warn that pockets of damaging wind and a brief spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out, especially in areas north of Interstate 64 early in the event.

The severe threat is expected to move from northwest to southeast through the evening, affecting communities including Louisville, Elizabethtown, Lexington and Bowling Green. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of central Kentucky under a Level 1 marginal risk, with a Level 2 slight risk extending across southern portions of the state where storms may organize more efficiently.

Gusty winds could down small tree limbs and cause isolated power outages along key corridors such as I-65, I-64 and the Bluegrass Parkway. Brief heavy downpours may also reduce visibility during the evening commute.

Residents should monitor weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if storms strengthen quickly. The severe weather threat should gradually diminish later tonight as the cold front exits the region.
