Paducah, KY – Residents across western Kentucky and parts of the Mid-South should prepare for dangerous severe weather later today, as forecasters warn storms could bring damaging winds up to 75 mph and the potential for strong tornadoes.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says a line of thunderstorms is expected to intensify this afternoon and evening as it moves across the region.

Main Threats

Meteorologists say the strongest storms could produce:

  • Damaging wind gusts of 60–75 mph
  • A few tornadoes, some potentially strong (EF2 intensity)
  • Frequent lightning
  • Heavy rainfall

Forecasters say damaging straight-line winds will be the primary threat, but conditions may also allow tornadoes to form within or ahead of the storm line.

Tornado Potential

According to the National Weather Service, the environment today could support short-track tornadoes, typically lasting 10–15 miles, but capable of producing significant damage.

Storms in this setup may also produce multiple rotating areas within a single line, meaning tornado warnings could cover larger areas than usual.

When Storms Could Arrive

The severe weather threat is expected later this afternoon through the evening, as the storm system moves east across the region.

Communities including Paducah, Mayfield, Murray, Hopkinsville, and surrounding areas should stay alert as storms approach.

What Residents Should Do

Officials urge residents to prepare ahead of the storms:

  • Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings
  • Know where to seek shelter if a tornado warning is issued
  • Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building
  • Avoid windows during severe storms

Forecasters say conditions are favorable for a high-end damaging wind event, meaning some areas could see widespread tree damage and power outages if storms intensify as expected.
