Jackson, Kentucky – Snow will begin coating roads across the mountains of eastern Kentucky by late Sunday morning, with higher elevations facing up to 5 inches and hazardous travel lasting into Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for Harlan, Pike, Letcher, Perry, Floyd, Knott and Martin counties. Most valleys will pick up 1 to 2 inches, but elevations above 3,000 feet could see totals approach 5 inches. Wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph may accompany heavier snow showers, briefly cutting visibility and blowing snow across exposed ridges.

Communities including Pikeville, Hazard, Prestonsburg, Whitesburg and Harlan can expect rounds of snow showers through Monday. Roads such as U.S. 23, U.S. 119 and KY 80 may become slick, with noticeable differences in conditions between valley floors and higher terrain. Mountain passes and ridge-top communities like Jenkins and Elkhorn City face the greatest risk for deeper accumulation.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and check conditions through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet before heading out. Snow showers taper Monday evening, but slick spots could linger after sunset as temperatures dip back toward freezing. Additional updates are possible if heavier bands develop.
