Jackson, Kentucky – Cold air and lingering snow showers are hanging on across eastern Kentucky today, but a rapid warm-up is already underway that will push temperatures up by nearly 40 degrees in just a few days.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, flurries and scattered snow showers will taper off Tuesday as highs struggle to reach between 30°F and 38°F. Overnight lows will drop sharply into the 18°F to 26°F range, creating another round of freezing conditions that could impact early morning travel and exposed pipes.
By Wednesday, conditions begin to shift. Highs climb into the 40s and low 50s across cities like Hazard, Pikeville, and Somerset, with mostly cloudy skies and a slight chance of light rain or snow. Roads should improve, though colder mornings may still bring patchy frost.
The real change arrives Thursday and Friday, when temperatures jump into the mid-50s to mid-60s, then surge further into the upper 60s and low 70s by Friday afternoon. Communities across eastern Kentucky will see a full transition from winter-like conditions to spring warmth in less than 72 hours.
Residents should prepare for freezing conditions in the short term, then shifting conditions later this week as warmer air settles in. Additional updates may follow as the warming trend continues into the weekend.
