Pineville, Kentucky – Snow showers moving across southeastern Kentucky could quickly turn roads slick within minutes, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces, creating hazardous travel through 7 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Bell and Leslie counties until 7 p.m. EST. Forecasters expect additional snow accumulations ranging from a dusting up to 1 inch, with isolated higher totals where heavier snow bands persist. Wind gusts could reach 30 mph during stronger showers, briefly dropping visibility and producing near whiteout conditions.
Statewide, eastern Kentucky drivers will see rapidly changing road conditions as scattered snow showers move through the Appalachian region. In Bell County, Pineville and Middlesboro may experience slushy stretches along U.S. 25E and KY 66, while higher elevations could see more consistent coatings. In Leslie County, Hyden and surrounding rural roads may turn slick, particularly on shaded secondary routes and elevated surfaces.
Bridges and overpasses freeze first, and untreated roads may develop icy patches shortly after heavier bursts of snow. Commuters during both the morning and evening drives should allow extra travel time and avoid sudden braking. Officials urge drivers to check live road conditions at GoKY before heading out.
Snow showers will taper later this evening, but slick spots could linger after sunset as temperatures dip. The advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m., and additional updates are possible if heavier bands redevelop.
