Covington, Ky. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to roll through Northern Kentucky this evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and intense lightning until 10 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for 12 counties, including Boone, Kenton, Campbell, and Mason. The watch, issued at 4:50 p.m. EDT, warns of storms capable of producing wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter.

Road conditions could rapidly deteriorate, especially along I-71, I-75, and U.S. Route 68. Residents in Grant and Owen counties should remain indoors during lightning activity and secure outdoor items ahead of the storms. Power outages are possible, particularly in rural areas near the Ohio River and hilly regions of Lewis and Robertson counties.

Local emergency management officials advise avoiding non-essential travel this evening and charging mobile devices in case of service disruptions. If you hear thunder, head indoors immediately — these storms may develop quickly with little warning.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., and additional warnings may be issued. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio.
