Jackson, Kentucky – Strong storms could batter parts of eastern Kentucky Tuesday afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and brief downpours posing the biggest threats.

According to the US National Weather Service in Jackson, a cold front moving southeast will raise the risk of severe thunderstorms beginning Tuesday, April 29. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) has been issued for areas along and north of the I-64 corridor, including Morehead, Mount Sterling, and Lexington, with the threat lessening farther south.

Heavy rain, isolated damaging wind gusts, and frequent lightning are the main concerns for travelers and residents. Communities near Flemingsburg, Owingsville, and Campton could experience brief periods of strong storms through late evening hours. Though hail and tornadoes remain unlikely, isolated damage from gusty winds is possible, especially on open highways and rural roads.

Drivers are urged to limit non-essential travel during storms, secure loose outdoor items, and ensure mobile devices are fully charged in case of power outages. The probability of severe weather will diminish overnight, but additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen.

Warnings remain in effect through late Tuesday, with more advisories possible into early Wednesday.
