Lexington, Ky. – A line of potentially severe thunderstorms is expected to sweep across Kentucky Friday afternoon into late evening, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and the risk of isolated tornadoes from Paducah to Pikeville.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a widespread squall line will advance west to east, arriving in western Kentucky between 2–5 p.m., central areas like Louisville and Lexington from 4–8 p.m., and eastern counties including Jackson and Pikeville between 7–10 p.m. Forecasters warn that additional supercell storms may form ahead of the main line, especially earlier in the day, increasing the potential for large hail and brief tornadoes.

Cities including Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, and Richmond could see rapid weather changes during the evening commute. Power outages and tree damage are possible. Emergency managers advise residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially as storms move in after sunset.

The medium-confidence outlook emphasizes fast-moving storms with all hazards on the table. This system could mirror past severe weather outbreaks in May, when quick-moving lines caused flash flooding and spotty wind damage.

Storms are expected to exit eastern Kentucky by late tonight, but additional weather statements may be issued. Stay alert for updates from local officials and the National Weather Service.
