Ashland, Ky. – Strong storms could slam northeast Kentucky by Friday evening, bringing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Cities near the Ohio border, including Ashland and Grayson, are in the crosshairs of the most severe impacts.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in effect for much of eastern Kentucky through late Friday. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to intensify by mid-afternoon, with the highest threat window from 3 to 9 p.m. Areas of concern include Carter, Boyd, and Greenup counties, where rotating cells could produce short-lived tornadoes.

Wind gusts could top 60 mph, especially along I-64 and U.S. Route 23 corridors, with downed trees and power outages possible. Hail up to the size of quarters may accompany stronger cells. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Travel delays and brief street flooding are also possible due to heavy downpours. School activities and outdoor plans may be impacted—officials advise staying indoors during storms and avoiding unnecessary travel.

Storm chances taper overnight, but another round could develop Saturday. Stay tuned for updates as watches or warnings may be issued.
