Louisville, KY – A cold, gray sky over the Ohio River sets the stage for a messy wintry mix tonight, bringing the region’s first true taste of December travel challenges. Southern Indiana and central Kentucky are now under a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, as snow and freezing rain move in from the west.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, total snow accumulations up to 2 inches and a light glaze of ice are possible by sunrise. Roads may start wet but quickly freeze, especially on I-64, I-65, and I-71, where temperatures will hover around 29°F through dawn. The worst conditions are expected between midnight and 6 a.m., when visibility may drop and untreated surfaces turn slick.

Drivers heading out early Tuesday should plan for reduced traction, use caution on bridges and ramps, and allow extra time for the morning commute. Even light ice can cause sudden slides or fender-benders.

By midday Tuesday, skies clear and temperatures rise into the mid-30s, helping melt any remaining slush. The rest of the week looks calmer — but colder — with another chance of light snow by Friday as winter patterns begin to strengthen across the Ohio Valley.

5-Day Outlook (Louisville, KY):

  • Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, high 34°F.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, high 38°F.
  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy, high 33°F.
  • Friday: Chance of snow, high 36°F.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy, high 42°F.
