Louisville, KY – A large portion of south central Indiana and central, north-central, and south-central Kentucky will face dangerously cold conditions early Sunday as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville. An additional advisory covers portions of south-central Kentucky, including the Barren River region, where wind chills will drop to around zero degrees.
For the primary advisory area—including Louisville, Lexington, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Bowling Green, Corydon, Jasper, Scottsburg, Paoli, Madison, Campbellsville, Bardstown, and Danville—wind chills may fall to 10 below zero between 1 a.m. EST (midnight CST) and 1 p.m. EST (noon CST) Sunday. NWS forecasters warn that these readings could cause frostbite or hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
A separate advisory for Adair, Allen, Barren, Clinton, Cumberland, Metcalfe, Monroe, and Russell counties will be in effect during the same overnight period, with wind chills expected to dip to around zero degrees. Communities such as Glasgow, Columbia, Scottsville, Tompkinsville, and Albany are included.
The coldest window will occur just before sunrise, when temperatures settle into the teens and winds remain elevated behind a persistent Arctic air mass. Officials urge residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and avoid prolonged outdoor activity. Portable heaters should be used carefully, and generators or grills must never be used indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
Residents are also encouraged to check on older neighbors, relatives, and individuals with limited heating resources as the dangerous chill moves in.
