Louisville, Kentucky – A widespread overnight freeze is set to hit both Kentucky and southern Indiana within hours late Friday, threatening early spring crops, gardens, and exposed plumbing before sunrise Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Louisville and Jackson, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning, with temperatures dropping to 26°F in central Kentucky and southern Indiana, and near 27°F across eastern Kentucky. The coldest window is expected between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m., impacting major population centers including Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, and extending east into Hazard, London, and Somerset.

The freeze risk stretches along key corridors including I-64, I-65, and the Hal Rogers Parkway, where both urban and rural communities could see widespread plant damage. In Jefferson, Fayette, and Warren counties, early budding vegetation is especially vulnerable following recent mild weather. Southern Indiana cities such as New Albany and Jeffersonville face similar risks, particularly for outdoor pipes and irrigation systems.

Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate exposed pipes before midnight Friday. Farmers and gardeners should take immediate steps to protect crops, while homeowners are urged to disconnect hoses and check outdoor water lines.

Temperatures will rebound after mid-morning Saturday, but additional cold alerts remain possible into early next week as conditions stay volatile.
